Clearly, if there actually is a functioning European or Anglo-Irish scrimshaw market, it is vastly weaker than ours by a magnitude of ten. A Massachusetts collector snagged a bargain.

March 3, 2026. Eldred’s, East Dennis, Mass. The Winter Marine Sale.
Prices include the 26% buyer’s premium.

The winter’s most substantial scrimshaw sale had representative offerings in all segments of the market. It contained fresh material along with some recycled material in multiple price ranges.

The Miklos Collection anchored the sale.  Results were mixed. A quick count revealed around 89 scrimshaw lots of which 23 passed. Some may have found a new home post-sale. The reasons that led to almost a quarter of the scrimshaw lots passing are not completely clear. That ratio did not extend to the balance of an overall successful marine sale. Some of the material was from last August or the not too distant past and reoffered with lower estimates and reserves. Perhaps not enough time had elapsed or the market had shifted. Other material, such as the Nancy Chase teeth, sported overly optimistic estimates and less appealing subject matter. A future post will examine some of these results and what may be learned from perfectly fine material, many by desirable artists, remaining unsold.
